Mountains and medicine

Mountaineering, exploration & effects of hypoxia have been passionate interests outside my hospital work for > 40 years. Contributions: understanding cerebral & retinal effects of hypoxia & high altitude cerebral oedema. In the Himalaya, I began by driving a Land Rover from Cambridge to India to lead a mountaineering team to Kishtwar (Kashmir) in 1965, and followed with some 16 expeditions, to West Nepal, India, & China. I was doctor on Everest expeditions (SW Face 1975, NE Ridge 1982), on Kongur (Western China 1981), Menlungtse (Tibet 1988), & climbed & explored in eastern Tibet (1996-2000).

Sailing offshore and inland

I am an experienced skipper and an RYA Offshore Yachtmaster. I sailed Whisky Galore of Little Todday in the Three Peaks Yacht Race from Barmouth to Fort William on three occasions and took her to the Baltic in 2009/2010.
