This textbook published in 2009, now in its second edition is a synthesis of practical neurology. I initiated the project in 2003, and was joined by Dr Robin Howard, Professors Martin Rossor & Simon Shorvon, colleagues at Queen Square. Together we designed the book, found an enthusiastic publisher and some 70 authors, specialist & international editors. My own contributions were planning, liaison with authors & publishers, writing & editing chapters.

My colleagues Parveen Kumar and Mike Clark produced this textbook in 1987 (Baillière Tyndall) with a team from St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Clinical Medicine became a main textbook in the English-speaking world. The 7th edition (Elsevier) was published in 2009. My contribution was the original chapter on Neurological Diseases and updates as the years went by. This book, by clinicians at one institution – ‘who talked medicine to each other’ – led to my concept for Neurology: A Queen Square Textbook.

Conference and National Events
I organised the first UK International Conferences on Mountain Medicine in 1974 (Wales) & 1983 (London) & the Wilderness Medical Society/International Society of Mountain Medicine Conference (Scotland) in 2009. In May 2003 I organised the 50th anniversary of the Ascent of Everest for the Mount Everest Foundation, with invitations to HM The Queen & Royal Family, UK & overseas dignitaries, Everest climbers, and liaison with the Metropolitan Police. £150,000 raised for the Mount Everest Foundation charity.
